North Kern State Prison (NKSP) staff, leadership and the incarcerated population united to raise awareness during National Suicide Prevention Week.

They gathered to emphasize the importance of unity, raising awareness while reducing stigma around mental health issues. The event featured a collaborative walk on Facility A involving the NKSP Honor Guard, executive leadership, staff from various disciplines and the incarcerated population. Special guests included Regional Health Care Medical Executive Michael Whittaker, Assistant Chief of Education Troy Tenhet and Region III Associate Director Andre Green.

This gathering highlighted NKSP’s shared humanity and the profound impact of life’s struggles.

The department experiences the loss of a valued staff members to suicide each year. NKSP is no exception, having lost one earlier this year. Their passing underscores the reality as many individuals face significant life stressors.

“We acknowledge stigma can hinder people from seeking help, leading to struggles in silence. To combat this, we promote healthy, professional communication and collaboration among staff and incarcerated individuals alike,” according to NKSP. “Suicide remains a preventable cause of death, and we encourage everyone to embrace their humanity. We invite open discussions about difficult topics and urge individuals to reach out for help when needed. Every life is precious and worth living.”

Organizers said at NKSP in Delano, they support one another while fostering hope and emotional resilience because we are stronger together.
