Kirtland builds community connections through honorary commander’s program
Col. Justin Secrest, 377th Air Base Wing and installation commander, hosted the induction and presented certificates to the 2026 honorary commanders. The inductees represent a range of fields including education, health care, public safety, business, and local government — bringing a range of perspectives to their partnerships with Kirtland leadership.
“Each of you were selected because of the leadership you have demonstrated, the trust you have earned within this community, and the perspective you bring to it,” Secrest said.
The program pairs civilian leaders with commanders and directors across Team Kirtland, including the 377 ABW, 58th Special Operations Wing, 150th Special Operations Wing, and other installation mission partners. Through those connections, participants can learn about missions ranging from special operations training and installation support to research, testing and evaluation, while military leaders gain insight into the surrounding community.
“My hope is that when your term concludes, you won’t simply say that you learned more about Kirtland,” Secrest said. “I hope you will say that you became part of it.”
The induction marks the beginning of continued engagement between honorary commanders and their assigned units. As participants get to know the service members and civilians behind the mission, those relationships can help keep the installation and its surrounding communities connected long after the ceremony.
